IWM Game Jam

The Imperial War Museum Game Jam was hosted at Abertay University.

The part of the IWM Organization responsible for sponsoring the Jam was American Air Museum at IWM Duxford in Cambridge.

We were tasked as teams to create a game with a STEM focus which could be used within the museum to teach younger people about the planes present at the museum. I worked within a team of 6 as a game desinger to create the game you can see in the video above. The game also had to focus on the early 90's game aesthetic, our team decided to go with the sega genesis look and retro sounds. The gameplay also had to be related to the end of the cold war and information on it.

We focused heavily on the Blackbird as we thought it was one of the "cooler" planes that kids would potentially be more interested in. The gameplay is flappy bird-esque, where it is your goal to keep the Blackbird above the radar but below the altitude limit. Whilst moving along the horizon you have to take images above soviet airspace of ongoing soviet secret projects to relay back to your commander, the better you do the more info becomes available about Blackbird missions at the time.

My work involved gameplay ideas, historic fact checking and small amounts of artwork, such as the general seen in the opening scene. I worked with another designer to come up with the core gameplay ideas such as keeping within the radar zone, inspired by a mission in GTA V and staying below altitude which was also an inspiration from the movie Iron Man.
